Reggae is a genre that originated during the 1960s
in Kingston, Jamaica, developed by low-income Jamaicans. It is rooted
from soul music but has a its own rhythm with unaccented beats. Most of
the lyrics involve how unhappy the singers are with politics and the
religion of Rastafarianism. Bob Marley and the Wailers, a
popular reggae group, managed to go to the United States of America and
perform the music there. They were successful helping make reggae
popular, but a movie entitled The Harder They Come seemed to have
pushed reggae more into the US. After the death of Bob Marley, though,
not many were enthusiastic to record reggae, seeing as how the person
who brought reggae to the United States was no longer with them. Reggae
groups remained, though. A couple were Black Uhuru and Steel Pulse.
Then Americans also started to perform reggae music. Such American
reggae artists include Eric Clapton and Paul Simon. The music became
popular again.
